X96 all-day show comes to Weber State

X96 will be at Weber State on Friday, April 12 for their annual all-day show. Kerry, Bill and Gina will be broadcasting their radio show from the Union Building. The show show runs from 6am to 6pm. Tune in or stop by.

Damian Lillard for Rookie of the Year!!!!

“This degree will help me achieve my goals in life.”

Devin has a passion for skydiving, whether it’s jumping out of a plane for a national competition or at his job at iFly. When he isn’t winning national competitions he is hard at work earning a triple major. Devin is earning his degree in Zoology, Chemistry and Business. He still isn’t sure which path he will choose but he knows he will have options and security with his degree.

“School helps you in your everyday life, whether you are using your degree in a job or just to help build your confidence.”

Sandi came back to school after an 11year break, she thought she was too old to return but she soon found out that was not the case. After she returned she realized there is so much to learn outside of your degree program.

Sandi was just selected to be a part of the Diversity Board as the new community chair. She will be working with resources in the community to help educate students in different cultures and lifestyles. Right now she is building a relationship between Weber State and a nonprofit group called Holding Out Help, a polygamy rescue group.  She is hoping Weber State can become a major resource for those that are hoping to start a new life outside of polygamy.

“My favorite thing about Weber State is how many programs they have available to the students”

She loves that the students are part of what makes Weber so great. The students are not just paying tuition and sitting in on a lecture they are actually part of the student body.

“Don’t hesitate, there’s no better time.”

Nathan had already earned a finance degree and was working as a financial analyst when he realized it wasn’t something he wanted to do for his whole life. Now he’s back to earn a Microbiology degree and hopes to go on to dental school after graduation.

“It felt like it was too late.”

Just as he was ready to graduate, Nathan felt like he was already locked in to a career and that it was too late to change it. A few years later he was visiting with a friend who had returned to college to change careers. It wasn’t until then that Nathan realized he could do it too.

“It’s nice to be in class with other people like you.”

Weber State has a high percentage of nontraditional students (students who are over 25, married, or have children). Nathan likes having more in common with his classmates. “It’s nice to have people in your class that have kids and know what you’re going through.”

Weber State University is helping make financing college easier by offering free help in completing FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in February.

Local student gives love a second chance

As part of their American Homecomings series, the Salt Lake Tribune just did a great piece on Jenn Comer. Jenn is an Iraq war veteran and Criminal Justice major at Weber State University who recently got married after having sworn off the institution (marriage, not Weber State). It’s a great piece about her wedding and how she’s gotten to this point in her life, but she’s been a superhero to us for a while now.

Your Weber State Degree is more Valuable than Ever.

Check out this story from NPR on how a college degree is holding up during the recession. Looks like a new study shows that most of the jobs creating during the recession require some kind of post-high school degree.

The article also talks about how jobs are not coming back in some sectors and how men are still trailing women when it comes to enrolling in college. The whole story is less than three minutes long, you should go listen to it.

Our goal with this new project was to reach out to the community and communicate our message to as many people as possible. If you aren’t quite sure what “Be Your Own Superhero” means, read this blog post I wrote back in March. The mall entrances seemed like a great opportunity for us—we should get a lot of exposure, especially from back-to-school shoppers who may already have their minds on school.

Our design process here was a bit more involved and substantial than anything we’ve done in the past. For one thing, we commissioned a lengthy photo shoot, starring plenty of nontraditional students to play our new superheroes. As always, photo shoots require a new wardrobe and a professional photographer (thanks to Zac Williams). Once we received our photos, we combed through them for the best of the best, and plugged those into our door cling designs. Since the design elements (logo, color, messaging) already existed from prior marketing materials, these came together fairly quickly, but it was still important to include just the right amount of information. In the end, they were printed and installed beautifully by Fusion Imaging and we couldn’t be happier.
